About Rob Burg (aka Hiking Historian)

I have twenty years of professional experience in history and museums and this past year I decided it was time to take my life and career in a new direction. After fifteen years running the Hartwick Pines Logging Museum and a few other sites for the Michigan Historical Museum system, I have branched off on my own presenting programs and doing professional museum consulting. I have the Northwoods and the Great Lakes in my blood and I enjoy all sorts of outdoor activities in this environment. I love the history of Northern Michigan and the Great Lakes region and through my writings I explore this history and the way of life of the North Country, including the food, the culture, and the environment. Come and explore the great northwoods with me.

Turning a House into a Home

I’ve been in my new place for just over a week and it still feels like I’m staying at a friend’s house. I’m slowly paring down the boxes and finding places for everything, but it is taking time. One thing … Continue reading

Moving Daze

I just moved for the first time in almost thirteen years. And what a trial it was. It is great to be in a new place as I had wanted to move for sometime, but boy, it is an adjustment. … Continue reading

It’s still Snowshoe Season

Good Morning! While most of Michigan’s Lower Peninsula seems to be waking up to rain this morning, up here in Crawford County we woke to a new blanket of several inches of snow. It being our last guided snowshoe hike at … Continue reading

Maple Syrup Season is on the horizon

We have our annual Maple Syrup Day at Hartwick Pines State Park on March 26, just about four weeks away.  This is always a favorite event of mine as it is a sure sign that spring is on the way.
